The volume of existing and emerging new research has made it challenging for scientists and health care professionals to stay up-to-date. The accepted approach to knowledge synthesis, where a small team assumes the responsibility of identifying and synthesizing all available literature on a topic, is increasingly recognized as inefficient. Consequently, many systematic reviews take years to complete, are abandoned along the way, or are consider futile and are never initiated. Unfortunately, the inability to synthesize and translate up to date knowledge has the potentially to impair patient care and/or leads to the unnecessary use of health care resources and research funds.
